Looking Back at the History of Dublin

A photograph can say a lot about Dublin's past.

Each week on Dublin Patch we'll feature a photograph showcasing the history of Dublin.

Elizabeth Isles, Director of  is helping us share Dublin's history with the residents who live in the city today.

Isles said this photograph dates back to the late 1890’s. James Mulvey and Ed Wells ( was named after his family members) are in the photo.

Born in Dublin in 1869, Ed Wells got caught up in the national craze sweeping America- bicycle riding.

Prior to 1890, bicycling was primarily seen as a hobby for the wealthy. The introduction of inflatable tubes, sprockets and chain mechanisms helped revolutionize bicycling.

James Mulvey and Ed Wells went to San Jose to train to participate in bike races and both men eventually became Pacific Coast riding champions.
