Local Mayors to Take Part in 'Iron Chef' Style Cook-Off at Farmers' Market

Each mayor will team up with a chef from a restaurant in their city to make a healthy meal from a bag of produce and groceries given to them at the farmers' market on July 25.

Information from the City of Dublin--

The City of Dublin will host the 1st Annual “Alameda County Mayors’ Healthy Cook-Off Challenge” at the Dublin Farmers' Market at Emerald Glen Park on Thursday, July 25, 2013.

Mayors from seven cities in Alameda County will partner with a chef from a restaurant in their city to participate “Iron Chef”-style in the cook-off.  The Pacific Coast Farmers’ Market Association will provide each chef with a bag of produce from the Farmers’ Market, and a local grocer will provide a protein item and grains.

The chefs must use all ingredients provided to them in preparation of their dish.

The goal of the “Mayors’ Healthy Cook-Off,” presented by Wellness City Challenge in Concord, is to highlight the importance of healthy eating, and encourage people from all cities in the county to include fresh fruits and vegetables in their meals.

The winning Mayor will receive a perpetual trophy, which can be displayed in his/her city.  The winning chef will receive a special plaque.  The winning team will then compete against the winners of the Contra Costa “Mayors’ Healthy Cook-Off Challenge” at an event to be held at Mt. Diablo High School in the fall.

Participating in the Alameda County event will be:

• Albany Mayor Peggy Thomson
• Dublin Mayor Tim Sbranti
• Fremont Mayor Bill Harrison
• Hayward Mayor Pro Tem Mark Salinas
• Livermore Mayor John Marchand
• Pleasanton Mayor Jerry Thorne
• San Leandro Mayor Stephen Cassidy
