Did You See the Giant Squid Over Dublin?

It had a beak and it was flying but it was not a bird... What was in the Dublin sky last night?

It was not a bird, and it was definitely not a plane but those driving along Dublin Boulevard and westbound I-580 likely saw it flying high in the sky. A 26-foot-long squid kite was spotted floating in the air above the Dublin Sports Grounds near the Civic Center Plaza around 5 p.m. on Tuesday.

The sassy cephalopod appeared to swim silently in the sky, tentacles blowing in the wind, for close to an hour last night.

Flying the kite was Diane Friedman of Danville.

"I call him Inky," Friedman said, laughing.

Friedman says she recently started flying kites as a hobby and had been searching for wind the last few days.

"I went to the movies in Dublin today and noticed the good wind so I came back here to fly," Friedman said. "I own about 10 kites right now, including a giant flag and an angel fish. We have great fun doing it."

According to Friedman, who says she bought the kite online, Inky needs 8 to 28 mile-per-hour wind to fly properly.
