Zakhary Mallett needs to fire General Manager Grace Crunican. If he doesn't, it will appear that heRead More doesn't give a damn about the average working stiff, myself included. Put the union stuff aside. Just focus on what happened. Two workers were killed as a result of unsafe practices as confirmed by OSHA. These unsafe practices were previously raised as a problem. BART's defense was that the user, us, wouldn't tolerate the resultant delays from safer practices. How cowardly is that, that BART places the blame on the rider? The General Manager is responsible for the safety of their employees. The risk assessment data predicted this tragedy. Safety comes first, but not with this BART management. I do not know if Director Mallett has ever worked a job that included some level of risk. He really needs to put himself in the shoes of the average worker (union or not), and then find a new GM.

$210K is light for deaths on a system that should have very mature operating procedures by now. I'dRead More say heads need to roll before the civil suits start. All of BART needs a swift kick - here''s the chance to R&R management.

Thank you, Amy. I've also had a very hard time figuring out how to confront this issue. It isRead More difficult when it becomes apparent that it just isn't nonsense anymore, it's dangerous nonsense. People will literally die if the anti-vaxx crowd is successful at convincing people not to vaccinate their kids. Potentially a lot of people. When you combine that with the stupidity, outright lies and paranoia displayed by celebrity spokes-people like Jenny McCarthy it becomes really hard to maintain ones composure (oops, I just lost mine). I suppose it's best to treat everyone as one would treat a good friend who is skeptical of modern medicine and scared for their children. As far as the black helicopter people go, I'm not sure what can be done to convince them, since they invariably believe that any data not conforming to their beliefs must the due to a conspiracy of some kind. I've known a lot of publicly funded scientists over the years, and the idea that they could all somehow be conspiring to harm public health in order to enrich corporations is ludicrous and insulting. Part of the problem is that as a result of reasonable skepticism of expert opinion, many people have decided that there is no such thing. Or, even worse, they pick people who have zero expertise but who are good at manipulating their fears. So now we have a huge population of scientifically illiterate people who no longer trust doctors, but are willing to put all their faith in internet scam artists like the "Health Ranger". This can't end well.

Costco makes millions off of supplements. Flip through their monthly magazine. Every other page isRead More some supplement for which people have no need. Not only are we a nation of consumers, we are a nation of gullible consumers.

I received my case of measels in 1967 in the ARMY at Fort Sill, Oaklahoma. When they startedRead More offering for my children I chose the imunization for them and now Public Schools Require them in California. Home Schooling by anti-vaxx parents will be the first ones to catch the bugs from "out of state" or "out of country" (Like UC Berkley with 14,000 of them) anti-vaxx or could not get the Vaxx.. TB is on the rise from the "out of county" rich kids at our colleges also. TB was eradicated in the U.S. 30 years ago but now it is back and we no longer give imunizations for it.

It doesn't make sense for me that residents of East Dublin should even care about the matter...youRead More purchased a home in what was recently open space. You care about construction now that you've moved in?
Save Dublin Open Space April 7, 2014 at 04:40 pm
This initiative is meant to do two things: develop Doolan Canyon (the only remaining open spaceRead More between Dublin and Livermore) and confuse voters so that they hesitate to sign the Dublin Open Space Initiative of 2014. The decision to develop would be with the City Council, not with voters (so it's doing anything but letting Dublin decide). If you want to limit development and traffic, and if you value open space, do not sign the Let Dublin Decide initiative.

I'm some what Libertarian but my reasons are logical. First, I had a relative who was hospitalizedRead More for "significant" cannibus useage. It's not for people with depression issues. Second, those who need a "medical" therapy can get it now. Third, it's still too disruptive an issue for neighborhood public safety given ALL the evidence. Other than that, smoke away at will Esoteric One.

It's no longer a matter of whether marijuana will be legalized in California (that's inevitable atRead More this point) only a matter of when. Repudiated prohibitionist propaganda, anecdotal horror stories, specious & baseless conjecture & bold-faced lies no longer dupe the majority of Californians. Make no mistake while these anti-marijuana zealots may now be a small yet vocal minority they aren't going away & will say & do any vile thing in their effort to deceive & obstruct their more intelligent neighbors. California is now & has been awash in marijuana (it's our largest agricultural commodity) for years & millions enjoy it's myriad benefits daily, but surprisingly the state has yet to be terrorized by the pot crazed zombies we've been warned about for decades. Anybody who wants to use marijuana is doing so now, have been & will continue to do so regardless of it's illegality & continuing to arrest them just breeds contempt for the our legal system & those in law enforcement. Marijuana is far safer than alcohol or tobacco as the tens of millions of Americans with first hand knowledge of the subject would be happy to tell the hysterically misinformed naysayers if they were actually interested in the truth. Unfortunately these ignorant cretins have been lying to us for so long about marijuana that our children no longer believe them when they tell them of the dangers of drugs that are actually addictive & deadly like meth, coke & heroin. People use marijuana & drive now & teenagers presently & historically have had better access to marijuana than alcohol, yet there is absolutely no evidence that legalization will exacerbate either of these problems. Instead of continuing to waste billions of tax dollars & wasting our limited law enforcement resources making criminals out of tens of thousands of our other wise law-abiding relatives, friends & neighbors it's "high time" we start to tax & regulate the sale & use of marijuana instead. 55% of Alameda County voters favored legalization in 2010 & you can rest assured that number has greatly increased since then. Our Assemblyman Bob Wieckowski our Congressman Mike Honda & our Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom all favor legalization & like it or not marijuana will be legal in Newark sooner than most think. The only people still opposed to legalization are hapless & sniveling losers & when the final votes are counted the only question will be how big a losers they really are. Volunteer to circulate the petitions, educate those ignorant of the truth & encourage everyone you know to stop the insanity of continued marijuana prohibition by doing your part to make the legalization of marijuana a reality in 2014. LEGALIZE IT !!!

yes but what is she doing now ? did she finish her rehab that she was doing ?
Nadja Adolf March 29, 2014 at 04:51 am
I don't think she was doing rehab, unless you call running for the district 10 senate seat a form ofRead More rehab. Meanwhile, with Yee out of the Secretary of State race, we could wind up with Alex Padilla. Padilla, of course, had a lobbyist illegally throw him a fundraiser and has refused to return the ill-gotten contributions. Padilla’s biggest claim to fame, however, is that he wants to pass a law allowing for the warrantless use of drones by law enforcement.

Chris Heston March 7, 2014 at 09:34 am
I agree that the problem of people driving all the way over to the left needed to be corrected. But,Read More this solution isn't working well for the traffic congestion issues. I never saw hard concrete k-rail blockage on that right lane which I believe would have solved the problem. They simply needed to force traffic to not be able to get into the left lane after exiting the freeway. Physical barriers work. Now, it's just another light delaying traffic, extending my commute time, and the current exit off the freeway eastbound is like a roller coaster ride. They should have at least done the physical barrier thing until the construction was over. Thumbs down to this solution.
