Great- another alert system to make drivers slow down so they can read it- why don't they broadcastRead More it on the radio like with weather alerts.?
An\on July 24, 2014 at 11:06 am
????? So, when a hit and run occurs and someone calls police, they can't trace the car to it'sRead More owner? Even if it's stolen the chances of catching the individual before the car is ditched is slim. My other objection is the more "alerts" you put up the less people will pay attention to them. Do you think they'll be putting up alerts to remind us to bring home a loaf of bread?
gene smith July 24, 2014 at 11:20 am
Ms. White should pay a little more attention to the way things really are.....not just live in aRead More dreamland where things have no relationship to other things. The Politicians in Los Angeles are allowing it's destruction, and in many cases encouraging it. I have no idea why, but the facts of the matter speak clearly for the inaction we have to witness and pay for the consequences of. Check History. Hit and Run Accidents have increased dramatically...WHY? There are no consequences.
Andy Smith July 19, 2014 at 09:23 am
How ridiculous. That's like arresting Amtrak for all of the times the cops pick up peopleRead More transporting marijuana in big suitcases in their baggage cars (it happens frequently---you'd be surprised). Amtrak has nothing to do with that----they're just transporting baggage. Same thing here---FedEx is just transporting a package; they have no clue what its contents are.

Political grandstanding

Meanwhile the national news networks seemed to miss the story when Google got caught in a similarRead More scheme, actually with more evidence of complicity. Not easy to find the story but here are two sources: http://www.wired.com/2013/05/google-pharma-whitaker-sting/all/ http://www.tomsguide.com/us/Larry-Page-Canadian-Peter-Neronha-online-pharmacies-Justice-Department,news-12323.html The story was mentioned briefly on the Leo LaPorte show and in more depth by John Batchelor (who noted that Clinton DOJ henchwoman Jamie Gorelick was brought in to negotiate the half-billion $ settlement; Gorelick now sits on the Google board.

This angry mob wants a mob society. As sad as the event was, it is obvious that 1) theRead More "kid" was messed up on pot (and those of you in the know are aware that today's pot can really mess a person up, it is often STRONG and many cannot handle it) and 2) only a fool would carry a "fake" gun that looks like a real one and refuse to put it down (and enough already about the possibility he doesn't speak English, too bad!). If you were a police officer and felt threatened with a gun being pointed at you would you just sit there and "hope" he doesn't fire or "hope" it isn't a real gun? These protestors I believe want something else...I say that by the looks of the crowd. I won't go into that here but they are all wrong....and I hope the police get tough when someone needs an ambulance and they can't get there because a bunch of idiots are exercising their rights. Police....keep up the good work but be careful and try not to make mistakes. Oh and for you protestors, your goal is to make this sheriff lose his job and then what else do you want? You are all a bunch of hoodlums with nothing better to do. The TV news LOVES that....but the headline should be "Scumbags interfere with common decency".
Ms. B July 15, 2014 at 11:01 am
I'm so glad Deputy Gelhaus is back on duty. He made the right call (sad as it is that the dumb kidRead More had to die, but you know dumb.....) Gelhaus had to make that exact call. "If" the kid had a real gun and shot someone, the same moron protesters would be whining about him not keeping them safe blah, blah, blah. Gelhuas is a good cop and made a difficult call. Anyone saying anything else obviously has no knowledge of the recent school shootings and mass murders like the twit at UC Santa Barbara. As for the crowds of idiots having their little march, who cares. Stupid is as stupid does.

I am glad to hear some common sense on the Patch. As reiterated by most, it is sad and I wished itRead More never happened. We've been taught by parents and just learning through life that you have to be careful and smart around police. Not that they are dangerous. They just have a tough job and have to evaluate difficult and potentially dangerous situations in very short time. I don't get the protest and whether he smoked before hand doesn't matter to me. The protest doesn't address the root cause of the issue and this seems to be a trend in our current society. Trying to fix symptoms and lose focus on the root cause.

I appreciate your comment Jeremiah and I don't think I could've said it better myself, so I won't beRead More redundant. Except to repeat only one thing-- This is why Mr Melhman: "the age limit is based on the medical risk profile that would endanger both the employee and the public he is tasked with serving. The likelihood of sudden debilitating circumstances increases with age and these jobs have a stress level which can precipitate it." I'm still of working age yet from day to day I have bizarre health issues pop up. I run abt 3-5 miles per day, 5-6 days a week. I'm in excellent health. I'm also clever and a bright individual. Yet I've begun having pains in places, and I'm also getting forgetful. My eyesight is decreasing. I get stressed easier than I used to. Because this is our natural human aging process. we age. we just do. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Now, in reading this article, I didn't read, nor did I realize we were discussing being let go at a certain age. I thought we were talking about applying for the job, where can age limit is set due to medical and statistical averages. So I agree with you, I do not think a person should be let go the day they turn 62. Most others do also, that;s why we are offered pensions at particular ages for incentive. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Lastly, your point using vote vs age limits is like comparing dogs to elephants, and completely irrelevant. We're talking about a person's capability to perform a certain type of job.

**** And I bet SouthernBelle knows something many women and men have forgotten - it's a whole lotRead More more fun acting out the roles when men act like men and women act like women and we all play the game and enjoy life as equal but thankfully different! **** Any good man who values his life knows women are superior to men and don't argue with them because even if you win, you lose!! :-) **** hahahahahahahahahaha!!! Yep, exactly how I feel. There are many many careers out there to choose from. Maybe a girl's passion is to put on 100 lbs of equipment and run up stairs to fight a fire and carry out a 250 lb man- but I'm guessing more aren't than are interested in that. But I'll tell you what, if my daddy's house catches fire and some gal runs up his stairs she best be able to carry him down because HIS life depends on it. And if she can't, then her taking a job she's unable to perform is just wrong.
southernbelle July 12, 2014 at 04:01 pm
one more thing--Mr Melhman, Not sure how long you've been in the area or if you are familiar with LARead More county hiring for Police and fire. But over the past 10 yrs they have had to lower their physical ability testing, as well as their hiring requirements because they had to account for women's physical abilities, and not enough men or women were passing the orals due to prior drug use (even trying it once counts), criminal records (DUI's fall in this), etc. This is also why the quality is lower than it used to be. We haven't seen nothing yet! It's abt to get a whole lot worse because no one wants police officer jobs anymore. so sad how we treat them!

This is exactly why I don't help women anymore. There have been several times in my life, when I'veRead More helped a woman who should never have been in a violent relationship with a thug in the first place. And every time, they've eventually put themselves back into the same situation. Going forward, rather than help, my response will be to laugh. These tramps are not worth it.

Precisely the point Ken. Only good information should be posted, not guesses. You cannot put outRead More just a description of a white compact car to the whole world as this would inundate 911 and the dispatchers with calls. That kind of information is put out over the radio directly to patrol cars, but not to the general public. Just like an Amber Alert, the information has to be specific for it to be given to everybody.
nunya bizness June 17, 2014 at 12:08 am
This is a great idea . Why stop here? Let's keep it going. How about blue alerts forRead More suspect/vehicle in a homicide that just occurred? And how about a red alert for a suspect/vehicle in an arson that just occurred? Or maybe a green alert for suspects/vehicles in a terrorist attack?
Desert Rat June 18, 2014 at 09:24 pm
Or a pink alert for?
Donalyn Deeds June 8, 2014 at 10:01 am

Ken, that has not been our experience. My husband got busted two Saturdays in a row. HeRead More "offended" the second time before the first ticket came. We went to the PD and watched the video, and sure enough, he was guilty. And this is a man who has NEVER in his 60 years of driving received even a parking ticket. We were stunned. But, really, my comment was not about the cameras, per se. It was about those who were suggesting ways to get around it, like lights on the license plate, etc. That's all.

If this is the most egregious "violation" of civil rights the ACLU can latch onto, thingsRead More must be pretty good these days.
Desert Rat June 6, 2014 at 02:16 pm
Well Ken, it seems you just don't get it. The test isn't about a 60 year old having a baby, it isRead More about applying the policy across the board. And, I am guessing that they simply asked some medical professionals at what age does bearing children become nearly impossible. Since there are women in their 50's who have become pregnant, they probably chose 60 just to safe as the cap. Wake up Ken, there is a bigger picture here. You are not seeing the forest for the trees, as usual.

@Lisa: The shooting only involved BART Police, not Dublin Police.
Ken Briggs June 4, 2014 at 08:11 am
Yes DESERT RAT , you are so smart, How come you are not a BART COP . WHY DO THE COPS SHOOT TO KILLRead More ALL THE TIME FOR ? if the one that got shoot might have another story ,
Desert Rat June 4, 2014 at 10:15 am
No police officer "shoots to kill" so I am not sure where you get this from. An officerRead More is trained to shoot to stop the threat. If a person dies from the shooting, that is a consequence of effective shot placement in a place where the bullet will immediately stop the life threatening action. As for your post, it is nearly incoherent so I'm not sure if there is another question in there.

Such a tragedy, and a waste. I think of being a kid, and doing stupid things that could have endedRead More terribly. I hope all families find peace....
Barbara Tahir May 29, 2014 at 04:32 pm
I am with Mari. While taking the puppy was wrong, since it belonged to the rescue organization, theRead More ultimate goal of placing the puppy in a good home may have been met. The fees that are charged for adoption and dog ownership in general have kept me from adopting a dog. It is prohibitive for a number of families to charge from $500.00 on up for adoption.
Carol Chugg Rivers May 30, 2014 at 07:47 am
If you cannot afford the adoption fee , can you really afford the pet? It's not just the cost ofRead More the the pet, you MUST factor in the cost of care and maintenance. It's not like having children on public assistance, if you do not have the means, you shouldn't do either.
Mrs. Brown May 30, 2014 at 10:49 am
Agreed, Carol. If one cannot afford the initial adoption fee, they are absolutely not in a financialRead More position to be a pet owner. What happens if that pet becomes ill? Veterinarian services are not inexpensive. And that's not to mention routine care and preventative care. I hope he is found safe and sound.
