Kolb Elementary School to Launch Walking School Bus Program Dec 10!

In an effort to ease traffic congestion around the school as well as to support safe and healthy transportation habits, Kolb Elementary School in Dublin will be launching its Walking School Bus Program on Tuesday, December 10, 2013.  The Alameda County Safe Routes to Schools Program helps to implement Walking School Buses in schools countywide, which ease traffic congestion, save time, and provide kids with exercise on their way to school.

A Walking School Bus is a group of families living in the same neighborhood who form a walking group to take children to and/or from school on a set route. Parents or “drivers” take turns walking along the route to and from school, collecting children from designated “bus stops” along the way.

Adults share the responsibility of getting the kids to school safely, which saves time for all of them, and the kids get exercise that helps them focus in school.  The walk to school is a chance for parents to share, teach and talk with their kids without the stress of honking horns and backed-up traffic. It’s a chance to meet your children’s friends, their parents, get to know the neighborhood, and teach your kids to be street smart and safe.

Alameda County’s Safe Routes to Schools (SR2S) program began in 2006 as a Caltrans grant-funded pilot program at four schools and has been growing ever since. In the 2012-2013 school year, the program provided comprehensive programming to 90 elementary and middle schools throughout the county, while the high school pilot program was expanded to 6 high schools, and has expanded further this year. SR2S is currently funded by federal and local Measure B dollars.

Safe Routes to Schools is a partnership between Alameda CTC and MTC.
