When the girls basketball team pulled within four points of Archbishop Mitty on Tuesday night, an upset didn’t seem out of the question. It was the final minute of the first quarter in the first round of the California Interscholastic Federation Northern regional playoffs.

Then the Monarchs ruled their court.

The Gaels failed to score more than nine points in any period after a 14-point first quarter, and couldn't stop Mitty's high-octane offense, ending their season with a 75-31 defeat.

“We fought them hard,” Dublin coach Mark Wainwright said. “There’s a tendency when you play a great team to sit around and watch them and see how really good there are.”

For the most part, the Gaels allowed the Monarchs to do just that in the first four minutes of the first quarter.

Mitty started the game on an 8-0 run, which was broken by a Cathrine Kruschke put-in at the 5:43 mark. The Monarchs, thanks to their full-court press, would go on a 6-0 run after Kruschke’s basket. Wainwright called timeout with 3:53 left in the period with the Gaels down 14-2.

“We found out how good they were and we started to attack their press a little bit,” he said. “I thought it was commendable that we made them take the press off.”

But after closing the gap and going into the second quarter with just a six-point deficit, Dublin couldn’t capitalize and Mitty started to pull away. The Monarchs used tough defense and an explosive offense to outscore the Gaels 55-17 over the final three quarters to advance to the second round of the state championship.

“They’re just good defensively and they can beat you in so many ways,” Wainwright said. “In the end, we played hard but we still didn’t have enough weapons.”

Kruschke finished with 18 point, leading all scorers.

“She’s our best player,” Wainwright said. “Most games, she’s the best player on the floor. She was our best chance to score and we’re always trying to get her the ball.”

Kruschke was the Gaels’ only player to score double figures. Mitty had four players in double digits.

“We have nice players but unfortunately don’t have as many great players as they do,” Wainwright said.
