Football: Gaels Drop First Game of the Year

After taking a 16-13 lead into the half, Dublin faded in the second half.

After opening the season with a pair of wins, the football team had its first setback of the season Friday when the host Gaels fell 32-16 to Livermore.

Despite the loss, the performance indicates continued improvement under first-year coach John Wade. Livermore, which moved to 3-0, has its best team in years and is led by a Division-I caliber running back in Demariay Drew.

The Gaels started strong, taking an early 7-0 lead on a 23-yard pass from quarterback Ed Achziger to Jabari Davis, but a touchdown run from Drew quickly tied the game.

Dublin jumped back in front, 10-7, on a 25-yard field goal, but another touchdown from Drew gave Livermore its first lead of the game. Thanks to a 35-yard touchdown pass from Achziger to Jeff Leung, Dublin took a 16-13 lead into the half, but couldn't hang on.

Drew, who finished with 178 yards on 26 carries, opened up a big third quarter for Livermore with a 53-yard touchdown run and the Cowboys added a pair of touchdowns in the quarter to seal the win.

The Gaels will now shift their attention to their first away game of the year — at Moreau Catholic (1-1) in Hayward on Friday. It'll serve as the final tune-up game before Diablo Foothill Athletic League play begins on Oct. 7 at home against Alhambra (1-2).

Achziger completed 19 of 28 passes for 207 yards against Livermore. His top target was Davis, who caught seen passes for 117 yards.
