Bottom Line: The Gaels offense went silent in the fourth quarter, connecting on just two field goals in the final frame.

boys basketball coach Tom Costello knows his team creates a lot of matchup problems for opposing teams. The Gaels are young, physical, and very big.

But Campolindo figured out a way on Tuesday how to stay one step ahead.

Campo tightened up on the defensive end, holding Dublin quiet in the fourth quarter as the Gaels fell to the Cougars 68-58 in Dublin.

"It came down to effort tonight," Campo coach Matt Watson said. "This league is a grind. You can't take a night off ever. You've got to take it one game at a time."

John Schmitz (16 points) and Carl King (15 points) led the way for the Cougars.

Schmitz got the Cougars off and rolling quickly, as he started the game with his teams first ten points, including two treys from the outside.

The first half saw an up-and-down tempo as both teams traded baskets for much of the first two quarters. Dublin took its first lead of the game on a Joe McGlaston three-pointer to give the Gaels a 25-24 lead with four minutes left in the first half. The teams would go into the break tied at 30.

"Dublin is a very physical team," Watson said of the Gaels. "We didn't want to get pushed around."

Campo opened the third quarter with a 15-9 run to take a 45-39 lead with 2:46 left in the quarter. A three-pointer to end the quarter by King gave the Cougars a 50-46 lead.

"We didn't play with a lot of passion and energy tonight," Costello said. "We need to pick it up."

McGlaston led the Gaels with 19 points.

After Dublin cut the deficit to 59-55 with 1:36 left, Campo reeled of a quick 8-0 run in the final minute pull away.

"We knew coming in that we had a size advantage," Costello said. "We tried to increase the tempo and push the ball a little bit. Our bodies just didn't respond to it. We played well in spurts. Our defense needs work."

The Campo defense turned up the heat in the fourth quarter, holding the Gaels to just two fields goals in the final eight minutes, the turning point in the game.

"We wanted to slow them down," Watson said. "You just get lucky sometimes."

Dublin will host Las Lomas, which beat Miramonte on Tuesday night, on Friday, while Campo will travel to Miramonte in Diablo Foothill Athletic League contests.

Costello knows that his team can't overlook any opponent in the DFAL, and needs to stay with the tast at hand. He also knows that his team needs to play with a little more spark in them if they want to be successful and have a date in March with the North Coast Section playoffs.

"Each game is an individual goal for us," Costello said. "We are a battle tested team."
