Gaels Rock: Dublin High Battle of the Bands a Huge Hit

Local Girl Scout Rachel Reed entertained and helped the community at Dublin High's Battle of the Bands event.

Local Girl Scout Rachel Reed recently rocked .

Rachel created the event to earn her Gold Award. The Girl Scout Gold Award includes many prerequisites, including 30 “leadership hours” and 40 “career hours,” as well as a 65-hour project. The project must have a lasting impact on the community and there are specific rules to follow when brainstorming a project.

Rachel put on Dublin High’s 1st Annual Gaels Rock: Battle of the Bands on Feb. 12. The had three bands competing; two from Dublin and one from Antioch, as well as a special performance by a band from San Ramon.

In addition to performances from the four bands, the event also included a raffle, a “petting zoo” where kids could play various marching band instruments, several carnival-style games, and a special performance by the Dublin High Winter Percussion.

The Jugulars and The American Legal System were the competitors from Dublin. Playing in the Streets was the competitor from Antioch, and the band Modern Day Kids, or Mdk, were the special performance guests from California High in San Ramon.

Students and parents who attended were able to vote for the band that they wanted to win. At the end of the night, Dublin High band The Jugulars became the first champions of the Battle of the Bands. The band received a large gift card from event sponsor , and the other performers also received gift cards. Individual raffle winners received event posters signed by each band.

“I thought the Battle of the Bands was a huge success. I think everyone of all ages had fun and it was a great fundraiser for the Dublin High School band. I can’t wait to make it a yearly event,” said Rachel.

The purpose of the event was to raise money to purchase new percussion instruments for the Dublin High Irish Guard. They have not been purchased yet, but the Battle of the Bands raised almost enough to buy all the instruments, with band parent Dave Shiell and the band boosters making up the difference.

The Battle of the Bands was considered a hit by all, and everyone is excited for the event to come back again next year.
