Fallon Middle School Does Fitness Differently

Physical Education at the school wrapped up for the year with a BodyCombat program to inspire the students on 'Fitness Friday'

Physical Education at Fallon Middle School in Dublin is unlike anything you may have seen at school 20 years ago. On Friday, 200 sixth, seventh and eight graders congregated in the gymnasium at Fallon Middle School in Dublin for 'Fitness Friday' to take part in a BodyCombat work out program.

The program, led by Ingrid Owen and Alex Meadows, is based in the Les Mills fitness program, BodyCombat, which is non-contact mix of martial arts and cardio.

Physical Education teacher Chris Branson says he takes a BodyPump class at his gym.

"I have been planning to get it [Body Pump] over here for a year," he said. "On 'Fitness Fridays' we always do something for fitness. We decided to do something big at the end of the year to celebrate the students' hard work."

According to Branson, students taking their weekly P.E. at this school participate in Monday 'Cardio Days' and 'Fitness Fridays.'

"On Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, we do P.E. activities to meet the state standards," Branson said.

Owen firmly believes the fitness program is something kids can do.

"I think you take what we do as adults and adapt it for the kids," Owen commented.

The 200 students felt the burn of the BodyCombat class for about 30 minutes.
