Las Positas College to Honor Retiring Dean Philip Manwell in April 2 Concert

The Las Positas College community will combine music appreciation with professional and personal appreciation at the April 2 Early Music Concert honoring Dean of Academic Services for Arts and Communication, Philip Manwell, Ed.D., who will retire in June after 25 years with Las Positas College.

“Dr. Manwell has been an inspired instructor and colleague. Those qualities that made him an exemplary teacher have also made him an exemplary dean. He has earned the respect and trust of students, faculty, and staff. His patience, integrity, and creativity will be greatly missed. At the April 2 concert, people in the campus and local community can demonstrate their appreciation and honor his legacy,” said Marilyn Marquis, instructor and Early Music Concert Series Founder and Artistic Director.

On campus and in the local community, he is well known as an educator, philanthropist, and champion of the arts. At its Bankhead Theater celebration last year, Alameda County honored Manwell as a Champion for The Arts in the Celebration of Our Regional Arts Heroes. Manwell is the recipient of many campus and community awards and a contributor to numerous arts organizations. He has participated in a long list of community arts events at venues including the Dean Lesher Regional Center for the Arts, Livermore Valley Opera, Livermore Shakespeare Festival, and Livermore Public Library.

The April 2 concert in his honor, “The Enticement of Italy,” will feature Archetti Baroque Strings, the popular and dynamic eight-member ensemble showcasing some of the finest early music performers in the Bay Area. They will perform Italian Baroque Concerti for Multiple Violins. “The San Francisco Examiner” applauded a recent concert as “a performance of dazzling clarity... Bach at his best.” The concert is at 8 p.m. with a 7:30 p.m. pre-concert talk by Bruce Lamott, director of the Philharmonia Chorale, who also has presented pre-concert talks at Davies Symphony Hall, Live at Mission Blue concerts, and the San Francisco Opera.

Tickets are $15 for general admission and $5 for students with ID. Tickets are available at the door, through the website www.lpcearlymusic, or at Brown Paper Tickets. Parking will be complimentary after 6 p.m.
