Dublin’s Young Citizen of the Year

Meet Rachel Reed, a young woman who gives back to the community

Dublin’s Young Citizen of the Year, Rachel Reed, knows what it means to give back to her community. She has been giving back through Girl Scouts since she was 5 years old.

Reed, who just graduated from , has held the prestigious title of “Dublin’s Young Citizen of the Year 2011” since the end of February 2012. It was her service with Girls Scouts combined with her good grades that helped her to win the award.

Reed, who has earned other awards in the past through Girl Scouts, says she has received the bronze, silver and gold awards through her service in Girl Scouts -- no easy task for those familiar with the requirements needed for each award. The gold award is the highest award a Girl Scout can achieve.

“To earn the gold award I helped arrange the school ‘Battle of the Bands’ in 2011,” said Reed who was also a percussionist in the Dublin High band. “The money raised from that event went to the band to pay for a new marimba. I organized the 2012 ‘Battle of the Bands’ just for fun.”

According to Reed, it took 65 hours of work to orchestrate the event, including planning the lighting, stage and food for her service project.

Reed also works at the and the Dublin pool. She says she tutored freshmen last fall while going to school and participating in Girl Scouts.

Reed was in shock when she was told she had won the “Young Citizen of the Year” title.

“I got a letter inviting us to the awards ceremony,” commented Reed. “I was totally surprised.”

So far, Reed has had a few duties to perform while wearing the Young Citizen title. She has been in the annual Dublin St. Patrick’s Day Parade and attended a luncheon.

Reed plans to continue to volunteer and set a good example for other young people in the Dublin community.
