Unemployment Rates in Contra Costa and Alameda County Cities

California's Employment Development Department released August labor statistics Friday that detail a decrease in unemployment throughout the state.

Here in the East Bay, the unemployment rate dropped by almost two percentage points in a year, compared to data from August 2012.

Alameda County’s unemployment rate was 7.4 percent out of a labor force of 777,400. That is a decrease of 1.9 percent from the same time period last year.

Contra Costa County’s unemployment rate is 7.3 percent out of the 536,100 people in its labor force. That is a 1.8 percent decrease from data released one year ago. 

California's unemployment rate reached 8.9 percent in August, while the U.S. unemployment rate decreased to 7.3 percent, according to the California Employment Development Department.

Editor's note:  A statement released to the press about these data rates says that the state's unemployment rate is 8.9 percent. The graphic that accompanies it, as you can see here, shows 8.8 percent.  We haven't been able to verify which one is accurate.
