Schools, Cities Host Fun (Free!) Bicycle Events for Bicycle Safety Month

Among the events: bicyclists can stop at BART Stations for refreshments, free bike t-shirts and commute bags as well as win prizes donated by local businesses.

May marks the month of Bicycle Safety and Awareness in the cities of Dublin and Pleasanton. 

In the Tri-Valley, the cities of Dublin and Pleasanton will host many events to promote bicycle safety and bicycling as a healthy way to travel, including the Bay Area’s 18th Annual Bike to Work Day, where thousands of commuters are expected to participate.  

On May 10, the cities along with Hacienda Owners Association, BART, Alameda County Public Works Agency and Dublin Cyclery will host an Energizer Station at the East Dublin/Pleasanton BART station from 7 – 9 a.m. where cyclists can stop and enjoy refreshments, receive free bike t-shirts and commute bags as well as sign up for a raffle drawing for prizes donated by numerous local businesses. 

Additional Energizer Stations will be available at the West Dublin/Pleasanton BART Station from 7 – 9 a.m., hosted by REI Dublin, and at Pleasanton’s from 7 – 8:30 a.m, hosted by the Earth Club. The first 50-100 cyclists to visit either of these stations will receive a bike commute bag and can enter the raffle drawing. 

In addition to the May 10 activities, the city of Pleasanton is hosting a free Bicycle Safety Workshop on Tuesday, May 1 from noon - 1 p.m. at 200 Old Bernal Avenue in the Council Chamber.

The City of Dublin and Dublin Cyclery will host a Flat Tire Repair Clinic on Saturday, May 5 from 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. on the Iron Horse Trail at the intersection of Amador Valley Blvd. 

On Saturday, May 12 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at REI Dublin, 7099 Amador Plaza Road, the City of Dublin, REI Dublin and Cycles of Change are teaming up to host a Bike Donation Drive. 

Cyclists visiting the “Bike to the Market” Booth at the Dublin Farmer’s Market on Thursday, May 17 from 4 – 8 p.m. with evidence of bicycling to the event such as a helmet or bike, will receive a free “Carrot Cash” voucher, valued at $5, to use at one of the market booths. 

In Pleasanton, all three middle schools are promoting a Bike to School Day on Friday, May 11. 

Two of the three, and s will host energizer stations where cyclists will receive refreshments and goody bags filled with bicycle safety items. 

Energizer stations will be located at the schools’ bike storage areas beginning at 8 a.m. The Alameda County Safe Routes to School Program's Bike Mobile will be at Foothill High School on Wednesday, May 2 from 11:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. to offer student cyclists a bike repair clinic.

representatives will be facilitating helmet fittings and free helmet giveaways May 1-3 at the three middle schools and Foothill High. 

Dublin High School is encouraging students and teachers to participate in a Bike to School Day on Thursday, May 24; an energizer station distributing refreshments and giveaways to cyclists will be located adjacent to the bike storage area. 

Finally, Dublin, Kolb, and Murray Elementary Schools are participating in Bike to School Week May 21-25.  Students attending the schools are encouraged to bike each day –a surprise will be attached to their bicycles one day during the week.
