Postal Service to End Saturday Mail: Will You Miss It?

The U.S. Postal Service announced it will end Saturday mail delivery by Aug. 1. Speak out: How will this affect you?

Calling the six-days-per-week mail delivery business model “no longer sustainable,” the U.S. Postal Service Wednesday morning announced it will eliminate Saturday delivery of mail by Aug. 1.

The plan to change delivery from six days a week to five would only affect first-class mail. Packages, mail-order medicines, priority and express mail would still be delivered on Saturdays, and local post offices will be open for business Saturdays. But eliminating Saturday mail deliver is expected to save the Posal Service, which is in debt, $2 billion a year.

According to the U.S. Postal Service, the reasons are continued economic struggles and the increasing use of the Internet for communications and bill paying by consumers. The U.S. Postal Service is also the only federal agency required to pre-fund health benefits for retirees, and those costs are escalating quickly.

“Our current business model of delivering mail six days a week is no longer sustainable. We must change in order to remain an integral part of the American community for decades to come.”

Saturday is the lightest mail delivery day by volume and many businesses are closed on Saturdays, according to the U.S. Postal Service. However, many residents receive print magazines and ads on Saturdays that may be shifted to another day.

A Rasmussen poll on mail delivery in 2012 showed “Three-out-of-four Americans would prefer the U.S. Postal Service cut mail delivery to five days a week rather than receive government subsidies to cover ongoing losses.”

A USA Today/Gallup poll in 2010 found the majority of U.S. residents surveyed were ok with eliminating Saturday delivery. The March 2010 telephone survey of 999 adults revealed people age 55 and older were more likely than younger people to have used the mail to pay a bill or send a letter in the past two weeks.

Monica, My post office is not busy because it's in a rural area. So that would mean I would have to travel over 50 miles to get my mail. Are we going backwards in time? I hear everybody talk about progressive government and such; how about considering those that live far away from a big city. What century are we living in? Is this government, only for some people and not others? Monica, the bigger picture needs to be considered. We all don't live the same. No matter how the government tries to lump us all together as one unit, it's just not practical. Closing our postal services would be like living in Canada. They barely get mail service, and their service is privately owned. But that's another topic. I agree, the post offices are not run smart, they are pretty dumb when it comes to spending someone else's money. We need to make our representatives accountable, that's the only way. Karen, I believe the commercial customer spends more money than a resident. Money they need. But if you are suggesting just for Sat delivery, then that makes sense. (That's if they aren't open etc) Still an interesting idea you brought up. Do you think decision makers read our suggestions?

Maurice..."Used To"...Died. Bread used to be 5 cents a loaf and milk was 10 cent a quart. My mother gave me $2.00 when I was 10 years old. Pinned it to my shirt with a grocery list. I went to the corner store and the nice lady that owned the store took the note...went and got all the things my mother wrote down. I ended up carrying two bags of groceries home and guess what Maurice...I even had change to give my mom. Hey Maurice...Used to...Died.

Sorry, yes I mean't only stopping commercial delivery on Saturdays... not weekdays, I agree that they are bigger spenders M-F.

I am a business owner and I value the USPS as it provides a very important service to my business. However, I rarely work Saturdays and if I do, it usually doesn't depend on the mail, or at least as much as it can M-F. I am merely suggesting that if a cut needs to be made, maybe cutting commercial mail delivery on Saturdays would be a good start. I also value USPS from a residential perspective, as I often receive pieces of mail on Saturdays that are important and not just "junk".
