The Mayor’s Cook-off brings our communities together to create a powerful force for real change. Through the Mayors’ and Chefs’ participation, we are modeling healthy eating for our cities and creating a better future for the next generation.
According to Cindy Gershen, teacher at Mt.Diablo High School, restaurant owner and founder of Wellness City Challenge, the program is in line with our mission, “to mobilize community resources, to empower citizens to improve health through nutrition, education and physical activity.”

Each city will be represented by their Mayor or Vice-mayor, the winning chef from the county event and a “sous chef” student from Mt. Diablo High School’s Sustainable Hospitality Pathway. The competition will be “iron-chef” style for the grand prize. Each team will be given a grocery bag containing a protein food item, grains from Safeway, produce from the school’s garden and from Pacific Coast Farmer’s Market Association.

Local judges including Narsai David, author, radio and television personality, will decide their favorite dish, and will judge on creativity, presentation and taste.

Sponsors of the event include Wellness City Challenge, Pacific Coast Farmer’s Market Association, Garaventa Enterprises, Republic Services and Safeway, Inc. The 1st Annual Mayors’ Cook-off Showdown will be held Thursday, October 24th at Mt. Diablo High School in Concord. Attendance is by invitation only.
