City Council Wrap Up: Community Donations, National Blood Month and the Process to Name a Park

Here's a recap of Tuesday night's City Council meeting.

City council members accepted two grants at the start of Tuesday evening's City Council meeting, which they said will both make a difference in the community.

Crime Prevention Unit was given a $3,000 grant from the Altamont Cruisers Car Club. The money will be used for presenting an afternoon forum to educate parents of Dublin middle and high school students on teenage prescription drug diversion.

The second grant awarded was from the Valley Spokesman Touring Club to Dublin Police Services' Crime Prevention Unit. The $1,500 will be used to expand the Dublin Police Services bicycle safety program.

Following the donations, council members presented a proclamation regarding "National Blood Donor Month."

January is typically a difficult month for the Red Cross to meet its commitment to local hospitals due to a lack of blood donors. This is often attributed to holiday fatigue, illness and bad weather.

Since 1970, January has been recognized as National Blood Donor Month. To help ensure an adequate blood supply, the Red Cross stresses the importance of donating blood to help save lives.

It was noted that last year residents donated 301 pints of blood and since each pint saves up to three people, that's 903 lives possibly saved.

"The need is really constant and we really appreciate your help," said a Red Cross representative.

Other items discussed at Tuesday evening's meeting included:

  • Introduction of a new employee: Stephanie Mein (who will replace Lori Miller) at the recreation coordinator for Parks and Community Services.
  • City Council member Dublin Pride Week Committee appointments - Mayor Tim Sbranti and Council member Don Biddle will serve on the committee, which plans and prepares the annual Dublin Pride Week event.
  • Bratts Entertainment is interested in building a venue called Star Lanes in the former Good Guys location. The establishment would offer 16 bowling lanes. The company requested sewer capacity assistance through a program offered by the city of Dublin and Dublin San Ramon Services District. The program allows for new businesses to get assistance when establishing their water and sewer service. Council members agreed that staff should proceed with looking into how Bratts Entertainment could benefit from the program, which was initially established to help attract new businesses.
  • Positano Neighborhood Park - Council members will seek community input when naming two new parks in the the Positano Development. Construction of the parks will begin in February 2012 and are scheduled to be completed in October 2012. Stay tuned for an announcement as to how you can voice your input on naming the parks.
