City Council Discusses Replacement for Day on the Glen Festival

City staff presented a follow-up report for potential themes for a replacement festival starting in fall 2012.

The City Council discussed themes for a replacement festival for Day on the Glen starting in fall 2012 at its meeting Tuesday.

Day on the Glen was canceled last year by a unanimous vote from City Council members as a cost-saving measure.

Two potential themes included a Pasta and Wine Festival and an International Festival.

The city hosted a pasta festival in 1998-2000, but canceled the event because it did not meet expectations and there was a lack of support for it.

"I went into this preferring pasta, but I think we can't ignore that our community has become more diverse," said Councilman Eric Swalwell.

He added that he would be in favor of an International Pasta and Wine festival.

As some council members pointed out, not every nationality has pasta. So the group discussed making the theme more about international food and wine.

After a brief discussion, it was decided that city staff will continue to explore the idea of an international theme that encompasses various foods and wines.

All agreed that there needs to be support for the festival from local businesses.

"Priority should be to recruit Dublin restaurants, but there are incredible Tri-Valley restaurants," Mayor Tim Sbranti said of the outreach needed to make the event a success.

City staff will present information about an event theme to the council at a later date.
