Alameda County Supervisor Scott Haggerty Visits Fallon Middle School

Middle school student's take on the classroom visit

By Lauren Manning (8th grade student)

On March 23, Alameda County Supervisor, Scott Haggerty, visited Fallon
Middle School in Dublin where he gave a one-hour presentation to each
of the eighth grade history classes about politics and county government.

American History teacher, Mrs. Sharbach, thought that a visit from a local
politician would benefit the students: “Its one thing to talk about or read
about government from a book; but it’s another to see politics in action.Mr. Haggerty’s presence helped students understand the connection
between classroom content and the real world.”

Prior to Mr. Haggerty’s visit, students researched Alameda County and
the board of supervisors. Current events are covered in history classes so
many of the students were eager to hear Mr. Haggerty’s opinions on some
events.

After a brief introduction about his background and what he does for the
county, Mr. Haggerty graciously opened up for questions. The students
brought up important concerns about the Occupy Oakland movement, the
newly developing Outlet Mall in Livermore, drug-sniffing dogs in Dublin
schools, and transportation to Dublin High School.

Mr. Haggerty was impressed with the high-level of questions and
understanding on the part of the students.

“I always try to connect with students and figure out what they think is
an issue. I thought the questions asked by the kids were very insightful
and very mature. I got asked questions that usually only adults bring up
and even some that I never really thought about myself,” said Supervisor
Haggerty. After an entire day of speaking and answering questions, he told
Mrs. Sharbach that he has a new appreciation for what teachers do all day,
every day.

This talk however was not just about politics, but also about leadership.
Scott Haggerty told students that being motivated is the key to success,
and it shouldn’t matter what barriers stand in your way. As long as you
have the desire to go after what you want, you can accomplish anything. He
told all the classes that they are all leaders; now they have to show it. Mr.

Haggerty’s words of encouragement left the students excited, motivated
and ready to make a difference.

“I really liked Mr. Haggerty’s presentation today because he inspired me
to make a difference and push me more to be a better leader," said eighth
grader Nicole Chen.
