A Youthful Work of Art For City Council

Fifth-grade students from Dublin Elementary present City Council with an art project they've spent weeks creating.

We've all heard the saying "A picture is worth a thousand words." At Tuesday night's City Council meeting a group of young students proved just that.

The fifth-graders in Rob Hubbard's classroom at have spent weeks working on a two-foot by three-foot framed piece of art work. The piece is a collage of photos each student has taken.

"We had a lot of fun doing this," one student told the council.

The photo collage of Dublin is called Our City is Green and was presented as a gift to council members.

"It was very interesting to see how much community love they have for our city," said Hubbard.

Each student was given a disposable camera and became a photo journalist. The assignment was to take pictures of Dublin, such as their favorite places, city signs, the surrounding hills and landscapes.

A certain sweet hangout proved popular with the young artists.

"I was surprised as to how many of them liked taking photos of Cold Stone," said Taylor Brakeman, the volunteer art teacher who helped the students complete the assignment.

The photo-journalism project required the students to take the following photos: two photos of grass, two of the sky, three pictures of Dublin's hills, three pictures of their favorite place in the city and one photo of a classmate, among others.

After revealing the framed art to the council, a few students took to the podium to express how much they enjoyed the project.

"I kind of like the part where we spell Dublin out with our bodies,"a student said.

Another added, "I felt like I had a lot of love for the city."
