Tutor Arrested on Suspicion of Assaulting Teen

Hyungwoo Lee of Dublin and San Ramon was arrested on suspicion of assaulting a juvenile with a stick. Police asking any other victims to come forward.

On Sunday, August 26, 2012, received notification from San Ramon Police of possible child abuse incidents involving a 16-year-old juvenile victim. The incidents were said to have occurred in the city of Dublin during the months of April and June, 2012.

The suspect in this case, Hyungwoo Lee, has resided in the cities of Dublin and San Ramon within the last few years and is a self-employed tutor. Mr. Lee accepts and provides shelter to teenagers from South Korea on student VISAs so they may attain an American education. The juvenile victim is one of many students who had been sent to stay with Lee in his home.

During the investigation it was learned Lee would physically assault the victim with a stick while the other students were forced to watch. Lee would also force the on-looking students/roommates to participate in the assaults. The victim had obvious signs of injury and scarring due to the ongoing abuse. Multiple acts of violence were described to have occurred in both the cities of Dublin and San Ramon within the years of 2011 and 2012; however, the majority of incidents occurred in Dublin.

Lee was interviewed and provided a statement admitting to the acts of physical violence related by the victim and witnesses. Lee was subsequently arrested and booked into .

The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office has charged Lee with Child Endangerment and Assault with a Deadly Weapon.
