The California Highway Patrol is searching for the driver of a red pickup truck that struck a CHP patrol car, injuring an officer, Saturday morning in Livermore.

The CHP had responded to an accident on westbound Highway 580, just east of Airway Boulevard, at about 12:50 a.m., Officer Ralph Caggiano said. A truck there had crashed into sand barrels, knocking the barrels into the two left lanes, and leaking diesel fuel on to the roadway, Caggiano said.

Two CHP officers on the scene were providing traffic control, lighting flares, when an unknown person driving a red Toyota pickup truck struck the rear of the patrol car around 1:20 a.m., according to the CHP.

The truck then fled the scene. The patrol car sustained major rear end damage, and the officer was taken to a hospital with a complaint of pain to the neck and back. The CHP was unable to locate the truck, which is believed to have moderate to major front end damage.
