TNT Confiscated in Oakland, Detonated in Dublin at Bomb Range

5.5 pounds of TNT circa World War II was found in a home in Oakland

By Bay City News Service

The Alameda County sheriff's bomb squad has safely removed old explosives that a resident had stored at his home in the 900 block of 37th Street near West Oakland, sheriff's spokesman Sgt. J. D. Nelson said.

The bomb squad is now on its way to the sheriff's bomb range in Dublin, where it will destroy the 5.5 pounds of TNT that had been in the home, Nelson said. Oakland police said a resident called them about 1 p.m. today to ask to turn in some old TNT from World War II.

Police responded by closing the 900 block of 37th Street, between Market and Linden streets, and the 900 block of 36th Street at Market Street. They also evacuated some residents in the area.

Nelson, who's on the bomb squad but didn't participate in removing the explosives today, said 5.5 pounds of TNT "could do a tremendous amount of damage." He said that amount of TNT could destroy a vehicle and everyone inside.

Editor's Note:

Nelson confirmed that the "boom" that residents reported hearing and feeling was the TNT being detonated at the Alameda County Sheriff's bomb range in Dublin sometime around 5 p.m.
