UPDATE: Three Killed, At Least One from Pleasanton, in Drunken Driving Crash

Victim identified as 53-year-old Maria Ochoa.

A drunken driver careened head-on into a funeral caravan Wednesday night in King City, killing three people, at least one from Pleasanton.

Early reports were that all three were from Pleasanton, but that might not be the case.

Maria Ochoa, 53, of Pleasanton, died at a Fresno hospital after the accident, Monterey County California Highway Patrol Officer Zoltan Treiner told the Contra Costa Times.

The victims were part of a caravan on the way home from a funeral service; nine cars in all were involved in the crash, which happened on Highway 101, according to the Times.

According to the Times: The driver of the Volkswagen she was in, Rafael Zambrano Llamas, 37, and another passenger, Graciela Hernandez Llamas, 39, were also killed in the accident. It was not immediately clear what city they were from, Treiner said. The fourth occupant of their car, who is also from Pleasanton, was taken to the hospital with major injuries, according to the CHP.

Around 8:45 p.m. a Ford Explorer driven by Vivian Ramirez, 42, of Gonzales, crossed a center median from southbound Highway 101 and hit the northbound Volkswagen driven by Llamas, Treiner told the Times.

The crash happened when the woman allegedly took her eyes off the road to pull a cell phone out of her purse, according to a KSBW.com story.

It was when she overcorrected that she hit the Volkswagen head on, according to the story.

Ramirez was arrested at Valley Medical Center in San Jose, according to the story. She was charged with felony gross vehicular manslaughter and felony drunken driving.

Fourteen other people were injured in the crash, and according to the KSBW story, it took three helicopters to take them to various Bay area trauma centers.

I do Flip them off! :P I count at least 10 people daily on their cell phones just during my 2 mile bike ride to school and back. Its a serious problem. I hear friends at my school getting pulled over for talking on their phones, and they get let off with a warning. We need to crack down on this!
