The California Highway Patrol is looking into the possibility that alcohol was a factor in a fatal four-car crash on westbound Interstate Highway 580 near Livermore this morning, a CHP spokesman said.

The crash was reported at 10:04 a.m. just east of North Livermore Avenue. The incident initially blocked traffic on both sides of the highway and a Sig-alert was issued at 10:14 a.m., CHP Officer Steve Creel said.

As of 1:30 p.m., all eastbound lanes had been cleared but only two westbound lanes were open, according to Creel.

The crash appears to have occurred when a Hummer driven by a 53-year-old man struck a Jeep Cherokee from behind, Creel said.

Those two cars hit another two cars, and the Jeep burst into flames. The fire spread to the Hummer, but the driver and his passenger, a man in his 20s, were able to escape.

The pair was taken to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley with what appeared to be minor injuries, Creel said.

Emergency crews were eventually able to approach the Jeep and determined there was at least one deceased person inside. Authorities have not yet released that person's identity.

Crews were searching for any other victims in the car, which was nearly destroyed in the crash, Creel said.

The CHP is investigating whether the driver of the Hummer was under the influence of alcohol, and Creel said he may be arrested.

Updated at 10:50 a.m.:

The CHP website says lanes three and four for eastbound traffic have reopened, while all lanes of westbound remain closed. There is still no estimate when lanes one and two on the eastbound direction will reopen.
