Just wanted to share a comment from an out-of-town visitor who emailed us after witnessing this accident: "Yesterday when I was on my in to Oakland to bring a car to my daughter my wife & I were driving right next to that person and saw them run over a 4’X4” board that was out in the middle of the third lane. In horror we watched as this person ran over the board and saw they were able to get the bikes front tire back down to the ground but the board had flipped up the back tire in the air and this person did all they could to hang on while the bike swerved with just the front tire down on the road at about 65 miles an hour. At the last second I watched this person finally get flipped off the bike landing on the ground in front of a truck that was right behind them and then run this person over. At that point my wife and I were in shock and couldn’t believe what we saw and wanted to stop but we knew we would have caused a larger accident with all the cars behind us. A few seconds later I looked back in my rear view mirror and for a ¼ mile or so watched the motorcycle still riding on the road with no one on it and then finally started swerving and rolled over stopping all the traffic. ......So I’m trying to let you know that the person on the bike was one of the few persons I watched yesterday driving normal and want someone to know that this accident wasn’t this persons fault. Since this has past my wife and I have had numerous night mares recalling the images we watched and we can only pray that the persons family members know that this person did all they could to hang on and that it wasn’t the motorcycles fault for the accident. I’d sure like the folks in that area know the fact concerning this persons death."

This is just heartbreaking. I'm firmly convinced that motorcycles and tiny cars and even, to some extent, convertibles are just too dangerous to drive in even if they get great gas mileage. This is one of the reasons people will continue to drive SUV's and trucks and larger, heavier cars. To protect themselves from this exact type of situation, so, when you see a large, gas guzzling SUV know that it is by choice that they are being driven and preferred. I speak from experience as I was in a bad accident and I WANT that steel wrapped around me and I don't care how much it costs for gas/insurance etc. Take the bus or BART or CalTrain if you want to save the environment.

Someone just died on this same stretch of freeway from a piece of metal falling onto the road. People tie your loads and make sure your not going to lose anything that may kill somebody.
