CHP Sobriety Checkpoint Snags 3 Arrests

340 cars were screened for impaired drivers.

The California Highway Patrol held a sobriety checkpoint on July 7, which resulted in the arrest of three individuals for drunken driving, California Highway Patrol spokesperson Officer Steve Creel said.

According to Creel, the checkpoint was located on westbound Stoneridge at Johnson Drive.

"Officers screened 340 cars and conducted seven field sobriety tests which led to the arrest of three people," said Creel. "Enforcement action was also taken on three other drivers for driver's license related offenses."

The checkpoint was manned by the officers from the Dublin California Highway Patrol office and went from 10:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m.

Although I applaud the three DUI arrests, I am not sure it justifies inconveniencing over three hundred law abiding citizens going about their business. I also wonder why they would not run the checkpoint until 3 a.m. to try to screen those coming home from the bars closing at 2 a.m. God bless The Thin Blue Line.

I don't mind being stopped for 8 seconds at a checkpoint to have DUI drivers removed from the roadway, possibly saving my family from a deadly crash. As far as why checkpoints don't go later? Good question. I suspect it's due to a variety of reasons, including staffing, budgets, and the fact that once people become aware of them, they are avoided. They are most effective as deterrants. Thanks to the police for keeping our streets safe!

I wouldn't have minded being stopped for several minutes at a checkpoint in order to remove even one of those drunk drivers. Several years ago I spent a few months in the hospital as a result of my experience with someone who had been drinking. A little inconvenience is well worth it if it prevents the injury - or worse - of an innocent person, or the impared driver.

Average length of time a car is detained at a checkpoint is 6 seconds. Thank you CHP for help keeping us safe!
