Safeway officials, Congressman Jerry McNerney (CA-11) and Alameda Supervisor Scott Haggerty, came together on Friday to launch the Wounded Warrior Project, a national fundraiser that will help raise money for military men and women who were injured in service-related injuries on or after Sept. 11, 2001.
The morning's high notes were both emotional and memorable. Supervisor Scott Haggerty told attendees that he spent nights thinking of his daughter (in the Navy) and would "write countless emails knowing she would only be able to read them after her training."
Haggerty served in the Navy and respects what his daughter endures. He made a point to acknowledge and reach out to those serving our country with a heartwarming "Hooah!" in his speech.
Wounded Warrior Project ambassador William “Bill” Hansen, USMC, gave an inspiring story on his life purpose to become involved in serving the country and continuing to support those who have incurred injuries on duty. His desire to promote rehabilitation services is only half of what he does - Hansen is also working on his Master's degree which will aid him in his rehabilitation efforts with veterans. He is currently the Dean of students at Grant High School where he takes part in truancy and discipline.
Many people were there as volunteers, most of whom are on active duty.
"Remembering those who have served in the US. There are lots of things that make us cry, but (what is most important) are the stories from the past that are told to us of those who have served," said Jennifer Tango who is in the military at .
Individuals from Las Positas' Veterans First, who have served either as Army Medics or other positions, were also in attendance. Christopher Southorn who works for the program spoke about why was came out to make care packages.
"I know what it's like. When I make care packages for other people it makes my day," said Southorn.
The morning was followed by some lighthearted fun between the US Air force, Marines, and Navy taking part in a bagging competition to see who could pack groceries the fastest.
