Dublin Student Competing at California State National Geographic Bee

Local Dublin middle school student, Rhea Mitr, is competing at the California State National Geographic Bee this Friday, April 4th, at the California State University, Fresno. Last year she won third place and received special recognition for being a fifth grader and posting the top score by a girl in the state event over the last 25 years. Only the top 100 students in California advance to the state level.

Additionally, Rhea, who’s just 11 years old and attends Quarry Lane School, recently finished in the Top-5 in the Regional History Bee Finals and has qualified to go to the National Finals in Atlanta in June.

Her family in Dublin is helping to prepare her for the State National Geographic Bee. Her mother, Mamatha Mitr, an IT manager originally from Bangalore, created songs listing countries in continents in alphabetical order. Her father, Arun Mitr, an entrepreneur originally from Mumbai, kept her up-to-date on events from around the world. Even her little sister Romal contributed by giving her quizzes.

Before attending Quarry Lane School in Dublin, Rhea and her family lived in Michigan, where she participated in third and fourth geography-science-vocabulary bees and represented Michigan at state level events both years. Her enthusiasm for geography began when she was four years old and was given her first globe.
