Remembering Dublin's Casualty of the Iraq War

It's been 10 years since the start of the Iraq War. Dublin lost one of its own in the war.

The 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq began 10 years ago this week — on March 19, 2003 — and although officially "over," fighting continues with discouraging persistence.

By one count, the war is directly responsible for 189,000 deaths, not including those who died from hardship caused by the fighting.

In all, 4,802 Americans and allies have died in the war, according to the Iraq Coalition Casualty Count, including 134 Virginians.

Among them is one soldier from Dublin. From the CNN war casualties website:

  • Staff Sgt. Sean Derrell Diamond — Died on February 15, 2009, he was 41 years old. He was part of the 610th Engineer Support Company, 14th Engineer Battalion, 555th Engineer Brigade. He was killed when a roadside bomb exploded near his vehicle in Al Salam, Iraq.
