Would You Tell Police About Your Home Security Cameras?

An East Bay police department is asking for residents to register their cameras to help fight crime

The San Ramon Police Department is asking citizens with home security cameras to register in a new program called the “The Citizen’s View.” Residents in San Ramon with security cameras can register with the police department.

The police department said in a statement, "police will not have access to the footage but will be aware that a camera exists when investigating a crime in or around their neighborhood. If a crime occurs in their vicinity or adjoining neighborhoods, the police may, if necessary, contact them and request a copy of their footage for evidence or investigative leads. The residents or business may have unknowingly recorded the crime, possible suspects or an escape route the criminals used."

San Ramon police are hoping the security camera registry will give investigators another tool to fight crime.

Patch wants to know what you think about the registry. Would you take part in a registry if it was offered by your local police department?

Would you tell police about your home security cameras? Tell us in the comments section below.

The police should simply ask via auto dialer or other request to the neighborhood directly. No need to register cameras.

Register cameras, then what? The police can't keep up with their duties now and this idea is a solution looking for a problem.

Absolutely. Anything to help catch a criminal. I'm in the process of installing cameras on my house and would register them FOR SURE.

Sounds like they wanna know so they(SRPD) don't get cought. They don't wanna get caught doing their job badly such as mistreating someone. Or just sitting in their cars doing nothing at all.

Absolutely, positively NOT! It's none of their business! It's NOBODY'S business
if I have a security camera or not! I'm getting tired of the various agencies who always seem to want to have their noses in peoples' business. If a crime occurs in my area, I would review my footage. If my camera had recorded anything that would be of help to the police, I would happily provide it. Beyond that, as I said, nobody's business but my own.

The police are on your side, and you don't know it. Your too busy looking for a way to bash them

Registry should read:
A.) I have a security camera and the police are welcome to inquire about it B.) I don't have a camera, but police need to do their job c.) I believe in privacy and I request that if I am a victim of crime, the police under no circumstances, ask my neighbors, local businesses or their traffic monitoring systems for assistance. I do not want to pay for the police time with my taxes, I will chase the perp with my own gun. JF

I think they should all have a key to our front door so they can come in if they think they need to. Maybe we should register alcohol in the home and video games and let us not forget offensive music. The local police fired a true whistleblower and exposed corrpution in our local police. They need to explain this to us if they are to gain our trust. I am NOT a cop hater but this incident must be explained.

There have been plenty of arrests of east bay cops in the past 2 years. There were plenty of other cops that knew what was going on and kept silent. Message to all cops......#End the officer code of silence#. Quit protecting a hole cops. When you protect the a holes don't be surprised when the general public treats you like one too.

Kinda seems like there is something hidden about it. If you register it and I am sure they request certain information allowing them to be able to get the view of the camera from their station. Just another way they can watch us and take away our security.

How about creating new freeways and wider lane freeways. Freeway parking lots causes the crap air.Read More There shouldn't even be a Bay Area Air Quality Management District. That money should go to expanding highways.
