Dublin Definitely Celebrated the Holiday Season

From parties to Facebook postings, the spirit of the holidays has filled the air in Dublin this past week.

There definitely has been a lot of celebrating going on in Dublin these days. You can see it posted all over Facebook and in talking to people around town.

There have been many get togethers geared toward women, luncheons and dinners at which they could relax and enjoy and possibly exchange a white elephant gift.

There also have been many cookie exchanges. These seem to be popular with moms and their kids, a chance to get together and have fun. The bonus is taking home a plate full of different types of cookies made by the party attendees.

Without a doubt, the most popular holiday party this year was the one that honored the ugly sweater. These were popping up all over. It is very fun to see people's creativity and their holiday attire when you ask them to be tacky.

There also were quite a few neighborhood parties and lots of food: dinner parties as well as brunch parties to which neighbors bring breads and muffins and drink mimosas.

The one Dublin party that needed a bit of an explanation was the "Boxing Day" party. One would assume this would involve a heavyweight boxing match but, no, it is the 26th day of December. In countries around the world, including Canada, this day is right up there with Christmas in terms of celebrating. It dates back to old times when servants would be busy working for their employers on Christmas Day. In return, the employers would give their servants the next day off and send them home with some sort of bonus in a box.

Whether it was just the girls, couples, neighbors or family fun, the holiday festivities kept everyone jolly in Dublin!
