A Haunting Experience at Two Historic Houses

Hop in the car for a quick drive and hunt for ghosts with the Hayward Historical Society at Meek Mansion on May 13 and McConaghy House on May 14, from 7 p.m. to 3:30 a.m.

Are you curious about things that go “bump” in the night? Have you ever tried ghost hunting on your own?

The Hayward Area Historical Society and theAmerican Paranormal Research Association are giving brave investigators a chance to hunt for haunts at Hayward's Meek Mansion (on May 13) and McConaghy House (May 14).i

Each evening includes a presentation by the American Paranormal Research Association on recent findings at the houses, information about evidence collection and review, and participation in an investigation inside one of the houses. 

This is the third year the paranormal investigations have been offered at the historic houses. Collections Manager Heather Farquhar was the first to suggest hosting overnight paranormal events.

“We are often asked the question, ‘Are the houses haunted?’” Farquhar says.

Ghost hunting at the houses has turned into a popular program, and the paranormally inquisitive have already started signing up for this year’s event. HAHS hosts the events as a fundraiser, with proceeds going towardcare of both properties.

The program also raises awareness of the community’s architectural treasures and draws the interest of new audiences. So far, the all-night programs have been especially successful outreach with a young and active crowd. ogram.

The members of APRA, who have partnered with HAHS since the first paranormal event, are both scientific and skeptical about their findings. However, they say their analysis of evidence they have so far collected points to possible paranormal activity.

It is the tantalizing possibility of finding further evidence or experiencing the paranormal firsthand that keeps visitors coming back.

Space for “Voices from the Past” is limited, and advance reservations are required. Participants may sign up for one or both nights— tickets are $75 per night or $100 for both.

Meek Mansion is at 17365 Boston Rd., Hayward, and McConaghy House at 18701 Hesperian Blvd., Hayward.
