Rumors Spread About a San Ramon Walmart

Some residents have seen fliers about Walmart moving into San Ramon. According to the city, that's just a rumor.

Fliers have been spreading around the city of San Ramon suggesting that Walmart is in negotiations to build a new discount department store in the Country Club Village Shopping Center (former site of the old Alcosta Mall Shopping Center) in south San Ramon.

But that’s just a rumor, says Marc Fontes, the city’s economic development director, who says he has no idea who has been distributing the fliers or why.

“We have not had any contact with any Walmart representative and no inquiries have been made by Walmart about that location or any location in San Ramon,” said
Fontes.

According to Fontes, the development or construction of a Walmart — or anything of that size — could not happen without approval from the city, which would also include notifying residents, public review of plans and an environmental review.

The large 55,000 square-foot building that housed Le Asia Market in the Country Club Village Shopping Center has been vacant since February 2010.

The city continues to work with Walnut Creek’s John Cumbelich & Associates, a commercial real estate firm representing the Kroger retail corporation, which still holds the lease for that property.

Possibilities include finding a tenant to fill the large space or leasing subdivided spaces to multiple tenants.
