New Chapter for Local Book Store

After a rain delay, Half Price Books finally celebrates with a grand opening.

If the line outside Thursday morning is any indication, Tri-Valley residents plan on doing a lot of reading.

After a delay, the book store finally celebrated its official grand opening.

"People starting lining up outside around 7:45 this morning, even though we didn't open until 9," said District Manager Matt Dalton.

The celebration was supposed to take place two weeks ago at the store at 7898 Dublin Boulevard. However, after two ceiling panels fell due to , company officials decided to put off the opening in the interest of safety.

Josette Walian drove from Fremont to attend Thursday's celebration.

"This store is great, it's big and really nice. I found some books by my favorite author," said Walian.

San Ramon resident Kathy Rich said she had been to store once before the grand opening to pick up some books for her nine grandchildren.

"It's great because there is such a large selection," added Rich.

Half Price Books has 112 stores nationwide. The Dublin store is the fourth in the Bay Area, joining Fremont, Concord and Berkeley.

The Dublin outlet is larger than most of the chain's stores. It's 10,800 square feet and will stock 120,000 books.

Half Price Books gets its books from two sources. One is buying slightly used books from individuals. The other is purchasing overstock from publishing companies.

As the name implies, the chain sells its books at lower prices than other stores.

The grand opening celebration will continue through Monday. The first 100 customers in line each day from Friday through Monday will receive a bag with a $5 gift card, and one lucky winner will receive a $100 gift card. Coupons offering 20 to 50 percent discounts are also being distributed.
