If you want to try something a little out of the ordinary for lunch, you may want to check out Cafe Garre at the Garre Winery. This little place is literally nestled in the vineyards on Tesla Road in Livermore.
While you might have to put up with paper napkins and the occasional insect buzzing around, the food is reasonable and there are many options from which to choose.
For appetizers, you can find tasty offerings such as fillo wrapped brie for $9.95, antipasto for $9.95 or smoked salmon napoleon for $10.95.
The restaurant offers five salad choices, including a delicious and colorful dungeoness crab louie for $13.95. Other choices include a wine country salad with crumbled gorzonzola, marinated figs, candied pecans and a honey balsamic vinaigrette for $9.95 as well as a Caesar, orange chicken or spinach and roasted salmon salad.
Cafe Garre has seven sandwich choices, including a prime rib sandwich, crab and shrimp melt, and reuben, ranging from $9.95 to $12.95.
My companion had the Murrieta's chicken sandwich, which was huge. It came with Jack cheese, caramelized onions, roasted green chile and a chipotle aoili on a ciabatta roll. This sandwich came with a nice helping of pasta salad for $10.95.
If you are looking for a sandwich-free lunch alternative, the cafe has several entree choices including linguini with meatballs ($11.95), chicken and mushroom carbonara ($11.95), duck confit ($11.95) and pork marsala ($13.95).
I had the smoked salmon alfredo, which was a nice serving of the pasta with some delicious flaked salmon on top for $11.95.
Another companion had a pasta special, which included chicken, linguisa and shrimp in a light, red sauce. It was so delicious he vowed to be back for more.
There are some kid-friendly choices: buttered pasta with parmesian, turkey with cheese and crackers, or foccacia cheese pizza for $5.95.
Desserts at Cafe Garre include tiramisu, a chocolate walnut tart or cheesecake.
Let's not forget the wine. Your server can help pair the perfect wine with your meal or dessert.
Cafe Garre has a nice patio, where they serve the majority of their lunch and dinners on nice days. It would be a good idea to make a reservation as space in both the patio and in the restaurant is limited. You may also want to play some bocce ball while you are there.
The cafe serves breakfast every Sunday from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Breakfast choices include waffles and omelets, which you might find with an Italian or Mediterranean flare.
Look for seasonal events going on at Cafe Garre. There are still a couple of Friday nights available for dinner that include a live band.
