National Healthcare Decisions Day

Monday was a day to prepare for making your own health care decisions should you become incapacitated.

Yesterday was National Healthcare Decisions Day, a day to raise awareness and offer support to encourage people to take control of their healthcare decisions by getting an advanced directive.

An advanced healthcare directive gives the patient the right to decide ahead of time if they want to stay alive through the assistance of medical aid should they become unable to communicate their wishes due to incapacitation.

The National Healthcare Decisions Day website offer resources for finding help with advanced directives.

According to the National Healthcare Decisions Day site, “All adults can benefit from thinking about what their healthcare choices would be if they are unable to speak for themselves.  These decisions can be written down in an advance directive so that others know what they are.”
