Dublin High Drama Delights Theater-Goers with 'The Importance of Being Earnest'

Student actors tackle witty Oscar Wilde production for their spring play.

Amidst the whirlwind of STAR and AP testing,  drama students put on an outstanding production last weekend. Putting on The Importance of Being Earnest,  by Oscar Wilde, put the students to the test. Thanks to the hard work of students, parents and , the performance wowed the audience.

A week before opening night, the cast was terrified. The set was barely built, props were missing and the young actors were stressed over their performances. Such worries led the students to work harder than they had on any production.

In the week leading up to the play, the students spent hours in the theater painting, building and searching Craigslist for furniture. Dedicated students even gave up part of their Easter holiday to work on the set.

Then Thursday night came and everything fell into place. The set, one of the most ambitious yet, was beautiful, the props were all in order, the correct furniture had been found and the programs that failed repeatedly to print finally worked.

Most of all, the actors proved on opening night that high-school students could take on such an advanced production. The drama students portrayed the pompous characters effectively, leaving the audience howling with laughter.

The opening night cast set the bar extremely high, which the closing night cast met with brilliance. The second night of the show, Friday, brought a whole new set of nervous and excited drama students. Like the night before, the actors proved that high-school students can perform well beyond their years.

Dublin High’s spring play also brought sadness. The Importance of Being Earnest marked the seniors' last high-school play.

The graduating seniors are Ashley Mason, Rhiannon Kay, Alexis Neideffer, Nick Harral, Sonia Bradley, Claire Shiell, Celina Pulenskey, Jessica Scrimshaw and Oleg Harte. Many of them have been performing in the drama club since their freshmen year and have made amazing contributions to the department.

Dublin High Drama will miss the talented seniors. They will never be forgotten and definitely left their mark on the program.

Now that the lights have dimmed and the set has been struck, drama students can take a deep breath and look back on an amazing year of theater. , the and The Importance of Being Earnest were wonderful performances.

As Wilde once said: “I regard the theatre as the greatest of all art forms, the most immediate way in which a human being can share with another the sense of what it is to be a human being.”
