Tiki Bar a Great Dublin Pastime...

The "best kept secret in Dublin" revealed.... Well, at least a little...

By AUTUMN JOHNSON

You probably heard about the “Tiki Bar” during our recent poll of the best cocktails in Dublin.

The Tiki Bar was named the unofficial winner the after receiving an amazing number of votes. In fact, readers are still showing their support for the informal neighborhood gathering spot a week later.

Patch was so impressed and intrigued about this community watering hole with the power to harness such devotion around town that we decided to pay it a visit over the weekend.

The Tiki Bar, actually just a Dublin resident's back yard, has been a mainstay of the community for more than 10 years, according to “Bartender Dan,” who likes to keep a low profile when it comes to revealing his identity and the exact location of his thatched-roof hang out.

“It is not your typical Dublin bar that is open daily and sells drinks for profit. It’s basically a community meeting spot that has hosted various charitable fundraisers and events over the years,” said Dan. “And in addition to the altruistic focus, the Tiki Bar is also a very fun spot to hang out.”

Dan says the the "Freaky Tiki" is the most popular drink in the house.

“Take one shot each of white rum, dark rum, spiced rum and coconut rum, add four shots [of] pineapple juice, a dash of grenadine, and shake with ice. Garnish with lemon and lime slices. It’s both delicious and dangerous,” he said.

The night Patch visited, the Tiki Bar had been catered with an amazing spread of Mexican food from one of our other recent Readers’ Choice winners, and was packed with about 40 to 50 Dublin residents.

The energy of the Tiki Bar was palpable, whimsical and a great example of the proud Dublin community spirit. Check out more pictures of the Tiki Bar on Facebook.
