Speaking of the feds, a precocious fourth-grader from Belmont stole our hearts with her letter lamenting the fact that the shutdown forced her class to cancel their annual trip to build sandcastles on Ocean Beach.

Over in Berkeley, a story that could have ended completely tragically got a silver lining when two motorists leapt to action to save a man struck by a train.
