City of Dublin Announces Winners of 'Dublin Idol'

At a competition held at the Dublin Farmers' Market on May 16th and 30th, Sophia Huang, a 6th grader at Wells Middle School, and Autumn Kelly, a 9th grader at Dublin High School, were named a "Dublin Idol."

The winners were crowned on Thursday, May 30, 2013 at Emerald Glen Park. Hosted by KKIQ Radio’s Faith Alpher, the competition began with a Preliminary Round, involving 30 singers, on May 16.

The competition was broken down into two age group categories – 5th through 8th grade students, and 9th through 12th graders. In the first round, singers were allowed to sing a song of their choice, a cappella, for one minute. Ten singers from each category then moved on to the Final Round.In the final round of competition on May 30, the singers sang a complete version of their chosen song, with musical accompaniment.

The judges for the final round, Dublin councilmembers Kevin Hart and David Haubert, local singer Kathy Blackburn, and Youth Advisory Commission member Angie Wang, judged the singers on voice quality and control, and overall stage presence. 

Sophia Huang sang “On My Own,” from the musical Les Miserables. Huang is a 6th grader at Wells Middle School in Dublin. Autumn Kelly performed “Dog Days are Over” by Florence and the Machine. Kelly is a 9th grader at Dublin High School.

KKIQ Radio awarded cash prizes to the top three finishers in each category. The first place winners each received a trophy and a $300 check from KKIQ Radio. The second place winners, Ashley Rose (7th grader at Wells Middle School) and Victoria Oblina (12th grader at Dublin High School), each received $200; and the third place winners, Kyle DelMundo (a 5th grader at Green Elementary School) and Victoria Datanagan (a 9th grader at Dublin High), received $100 each.

The “Dublin Idol” winners will be recognized at an upcoming City Council meeting.
