Hello to All!

Hi! I'm Aggie Burke, Bible Study Coordinator at the Catholic Community of Pleasanton. I teach Bible Study and I want to invite everyone to our study. All are welcome.

My name is Aggie Burke. I'm a Dublin resident who is the bible study coordinator at the Catholic Community of Pleasanton (CCOP). I teach Bible Study there.

I hold a master's degree in Biblical Languages from the Franciscan School of Theology at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, which means I read and write Biblical Hebrew and Biblical Greek. These are the original languages of the Bible. The entire Old Testament was written in Hebrew (with a smattering of Aramaic) and the entire New Testament was written in Greek. The Latin Vulgate Bible was the first translation of the entire Old and New Testament together, completed by Jerome in the late 300s. (The Old Testament had been translated into Greek in the 200s BC or BCE, if you prefer).

Bible Study is held at St. Augustine Parish Hall at 7:15 p.m. on Thursday evenings and repeated on the following Friday mornings at 9:15 a.m. Each meeting consists of opening prayer, lecture and small group faith sharing. Meetings are one hour and 45 minutes. Sessions are generally six to seven weeks long. The materials cost for each Bible Study session is $30 and child care is available on Fridays. All are welcome!

We are currently studying the Psalms. As a special treat, the CCOP Cantors (the Mass soloists) have joined us and sing the opening prayers. We are focusing on the Royal Psalms - those Psalms that celebrate the kingship of both God and His representative, the human king; the Lament Psalms - which are the majority of the Psalms, taking up over one-third of the Psalter and include Psalms of vengeance; and the Thanksgiving Psalms - those that celebrate God's rescue of the Psalmist from danger and trouble. We will conclude our study with our traditional Bible Study Feast!

Our next Bible Study begins on March 1-2. It is titled: "The Cross and the Empty Tomb - the Passion and Resurrection Narratives." This study will focus on how each of the four Gospels describes the last days of Jesus. We will learn the spiritual meaning of Jesus' last days on Earth - from the betrayal by Judas and the Last Supper to the Glorious Resurrection. The study will continue until April 19-20.
