School Life Without Lockers

A Dublin High School junior sounds off about the recent removal of lockers on campus.

I've noticed a new feeling at Dublin High this year. It's like there's a new burden on each student's shoulders. Literally. With the removal of  student lockers on campus, students now are forced to carry all their supplies, instead of being able to store their things between classes. While the school administration claims that locker removal is a necessary sacrifice for the extensive renovations going on at Dublin High, I think it's just another burden that students will have to live with.

Lockers are where students can keep what they need in a place where they can get it when they need it. Anything from books, binders, workbooks, folders, lunches, homework and even extra clothing can be kept there. Without lockers, students have to carry all of these things throughout the school day. It can very annoying.

I have five academic classes (some students have six), and each requires a different binder. My backpack makes me look like I have a large hump on my back. Walking around with a giant backpack isn't the least bit cool. It's even worse for girls who carry those fashionable shoulder bags instead of backpacks.

The school board made the decision to do away permanently with the lockers because of the maintenance fees that go with them. Even with the massive remodeling going on at Dublin High, it doesn't look like we're going to have lockers any time soon. Instead, the school has been using the money to purchase new class sets of textbooks, so students no longer need to take books home every day.

It may have been inconvenient to cart around two or three school books, but having a locker to keep them in made the situation much better. Also, without books on hand, we can't get any extra homework done at school. Having a locker in high school is like a rite of passage - one that new freshmen, like my brother, miss out on. It's a part of the high school experience that shouldn't be taken away. Yes, there are students who don't care about not having lockers, and others who simply adjust to the change, but most of the students at Dublin High need them again. I think we should have lockers back as soon as possible, otherwise school will be that much harder.
