Dublin High's Drama Club Wins at Theatre Competition

Students competed at Ohlone College's annual theatre competition.

Drama Club joined California’s most talented and ambitious theater students at Fremont’s Ohlone College for a weekend packed with one-acts, musicals, monologues, ensembles and tech designs. The 17th annual competition was extremely tough but Dublin High made it into the final round and brought home an award.

To prepare for the college's Theatre Festival, students dedicated hours perfecting their routines and getting as much feedback as possible. A few days before the competition, Dublin High drama teacher dedicated rehearsals to improving students' entries.

Thursday night, students performed before friends and parents. Having extra rehearsals and a dry run before the competition was extremely helpful and made the drama students work even harder at perfecting their entries.

At the competition, the campus was packed with thousands of students rushing to get into their costumes, having insane dance parties in the gym during the opening rally and setting up tents to serve as gathering places.

Despite pouring rain that flooded our tent and left us soaking wet, Friday’s competitions went very well. Going up against prestigious arts schools that brought hundreds of kids was intimidating, but Dublin High drama students felt proud and confident that they could hold their ground against well known schools.

We got little sleep and woke up early Saturday for another round of performances starting at 9 a.m. Performing twice meant that students could be rated by several judges and hear a wider range of opinions.

After a long morning, students waited eagerly to learn if they had made the final round in their category. Students watched the lists go up and cheered loudly whenever a fellow classmate made the last round.

Fortunately, the members of Dublin High's Drama Club proved they could compete against larger schools — six of our 14 entries moved to the final round. The fact that so many of our talented drama students made it to the finals was a feat to be extremely proud of.

Finally, after a long day of performances, suspense and nerves, the awards were presented. Dublin High senior Ashley Mason won first place in an outstanding tap dance number in the theatre dance category.

When her name was announced, Dublin High students erupted into  screams and jumped  to their feet. It was an amazing feeling and Ashley deserved the honor. Freshman Patrick Wallace also received a special judges award for his work as a monitor during the competition.

The Dublin High Drama Club has an amazing amount of talent that is sure to grow. And the best is yet to come for Dublin High at the Ohlone College Theatre Festival.

The Dublin High Drama Club returns with "," opening April 28 at Dublin High's Little Theatre.
