Dublin High Skit Rally Ignites Homecoming

A standing-room only audience of students, parents and siblings were treated to band and cheer performances, class skit competition and ear-splitting spirit Thursday evening.

Dublin High's loudest and most spirited annual event is definitively the Homecoming Skit Rally.

Since Monday, Dublin High freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors have been competing for Spirit Points through a diverse set of Homecoming Week challenges.  Last night, each class presented themed skits collectively involving hundreds of students who have found time to write scripts, choreograph dance moves, build sets and practice lines in between studying, and doing homework and other extracurricular activities.

The hard (but fun) work paid off Thursday evening to the ear-splitting cheers of classmates, parents, Dublin High staff and members of the community.  Behind the scenes parents donate time (and their homes) not just to skit preparation but also to building Homecoming Floats and other events (such as the Homecoming Carnival).  The competition for Spirit Points is fierce and the specifics of each class skit is kept under wraps - very much on a need-to-know basis.  A panel of teachers served as judges for the evening with Friday's Homecoming Parade Float competition waiting in the wings before a winning class can be announced.

The class themes for 2010:

  • Freshmen: "Under the Disco Ball"
  • Sophomores: "Under the Sun"
  • Juniors: "Under the Big Top"
  • Seniors: "Under the Bed"

Each skit played off these themes with freshmen poking fun at seniors (and seniors poking fun at everyone in between).  The diverse music used for dance numbers is best described as spirited.

Homecoming Prince and Princesses (grades 9-11) and the Homecoming King (grade 12) were announced throughout the evening.  The drama for each selection was heightened by a "red rose" process: Each nominee received a sealed box containing a rose; the box with the red rose went to the class-voted winner.  The Homecoming Queen will be announced Friday at the varsity football game.

The evening kicked off with a pitch-perfect rendition of the national anthem and performances by Dublin High's award-winning Cheerleading Squad and Marching Band.  The standing-room only audience also was treated to a performance by the Dublin High Dance Squad and a fast (and funny) tournament of "pillow sumo wrestling."
