Doors Officially Open for New DHS Sports Complex
Homecoming week continued at Dublin High with a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new sports complex on campus.
The doors at the new sports complex at Dublin High officially opened Thursday night and both the girls and boys basketball teams wasted no time getting on the court and shooting hoops.
The new athletic facility was made possible by the Measure 'C' School Bond that was passed by Dublin voters in the 2004 election. The complex is part of the $120 million Dublin High Renewal Project, which includes a new performance arts center that has not yet opened, among other new buildings.
The event brought together Mayor Tim Sbranti, Superintendent Stephen Hanke, Dublin High Principal Carol Shimizu, members of City Council, a representative from Congressman Jerry McNerney's office and dozens of parents and students. All of whom, said the event was a celebration and a way to show the community where their money has gone.
"It's just amazing, this is a day of celebration and pride," said Superintendent Hanke. "We want to offer our heartfelt thank you's to the community for passing Measure C."
Principal Shimizu also made a point to show her appreciation for the community that made the complex possible. "Our staff and students are so thankful for what the community has offered to us," said Shimizu.
A Representative from Congressman Jerry McNerney's office presented the school and city with a certificate of recognition in honor of the opening.
The athletic complex can seat 1,800 and because of the spacious floor area, additional seating can increase that number to 2,200. Mayor Sbranti said the building is environmentally friendly and offers a great amount of natural light and energy efficient products.
The facility includes two different areas with lockers and showers, offices for coaches and even a training room with a whirlpool.
Dublin High offers a total of 22 athletic programs for boys and girls and athletes playing in the complex will include the volleyball teams, basketball teams and the wrestling team.
Student Body President and basketball player, Ben Young, noted that it will be an honor to play on the new court. "It will give us all the peace of mind that we know we're working in the top of the line facility," said Young. "I'm just looking forward to a wonderful season and all of the pride that this will bring to Dublin High School and the community."
