Charter School Hearing Date Not Yet Decided

Tassajara Preparatory High School will not be on the agenda in April as was previously announced.

A meeting date for a state hearing on whether a charter school should be allowed in Dublin has not yet been set, contrary to what the Dublin Unified School District said it was originally told.

It had been announced that the proposed Tassajara Preparatory High School was on the April 6 agenda of the state Advisory Commission on Charter Schools, but that is not the case.

"We have received word that they have taken the charter school appeal off of their agenda in April pending further dialogue with the petitioners," said Superintendent Stephen Hanke.

According to the California Department of Education Charter Schools Division, the earliest the item could be heard is June 8.

"The materials are still under review, and we can't comment on when the item will be heard," said Casey Koehler, staff services analyst.

After the committee holds its meeting on the issue, it will make a recommendation to the state Board of Education, which will then vote. The board meets in July, September and November.

The proposed charter school was denied by the Dublin Unified School District last March. Community members met last week to discuss the proposed charter school. Those opposed to the school are aiming to collect at least 1,000 signatures from community members.

The school also was denied by the Alameda County Office of Education, but that decision is being appealed to the state Department of Education.

Opponents of the charter school have said it would take resources from the district's public schools. According to a district handout, one result could be a reduction of about $6,000 per student in annual funding for every student who opts to attend the charter school.

According to its website, the Tassajara Preparatory High School would open in 2012

The Tri-Valley Learning Corporation, which runs the newly established Livermore Valley Charter Preparatory High School, is behind the proposal. Officials did not return a call or email regarding the school.

Interesting - the original timeline for Tassajara Prep, according to their website as recently as today, was for the charter petition to be approved Dec 2010 and an interim facility secured July 2011. Now it looks like the earliest the Tassajara Prep charter could be approved is July 2011. Due to the 7 (or more) month delay in getting the petition appealed at the State level, parents considering Tassajara Prep for 2012 will likely have no idea where the school will be located until well into 2011-12 school year given the complexity of Prop. 39 facilities negotiations that have taken place in other Districts. That's if Tassajara Prep is approved at all given the level of community opposition.
